What are some of the map scales commonly used in US topographic maps? Which one shows more detail, which one covers more area?
The topographic map below shows one of my field areas, Ongivinuk Lake in Southwestern Alaska. First, figure out where the mountains and valleys are on this map (remember, water generally collects in depressions, so this part should be easy). Now, what is the shape of these valleys. Are they shaped like giant U's (flat bottoms, steep sides) or giant V's (narrow bottom, sides of constant slope)?
