ENVS 149           Field trip to the MDC sewage treatment facility

there is no lab handout for this week's lab back to ENVS 149 lab page

a) Water Pollution Control in Harford

This week we will be visiting the sewage treatment facility on the Connecticut River.  Use GoogleMaps to locate the facility.  It is right next to Brainerd Airport just east of Trinity.  Browse to the MDC webpage on sewage treatment from the following link:

MDC

Particularly look at how wastewater treatment works.  There will be a questions on the pre-lab that focus on the process.

b) Combined Sewer Overflow

Currently the MDC is working on projects to reduce the amount of raw sewage that enters the Conencticut River.  This occasionally happens during large storm water events because of connectivity between storm water sewers and sanitary sewers.  When large volumes of storm water runoff flood the system, wastewater is discharged without treatment directly into the Connecticut River.   One location of this discharge is in Weathersfield Cove which is located directly next the Hartford sewage treatment facility (use GoogleMaps or GoogleEarth to locate the cove. IF you already located the MDC facility this should be easy).  The MDC is working on abating combined sewage overflow (CSO).  Take a look at the webpage that discusses CSO abatement and track the history of the project that has led to Phase 1 of the Connecticut River Cleanup Program.  You can access the CSO information from the above MDC link. Look for the Clean Water Project on the site map of the website.
