The course will discuss Latin American Literary testimonies linked to the defense, promotion or violation of Human Rights. It aims at studying Latin American texts, narrative genres, aesthetic theories and debates in relation to historical, political and social issues they enter into a dialogue with.
We will concentrate on first hand accounts of social and political experiences as narrated by the protagonists, and we will discuss them in light of literary theory and testimonial theory, as well as in light of other accounts (press coverage, official accounts, historiographical texts).
Special attention will be given to testimonies given by persons belonging to various repressed social groups and organizations: social and political activists, critical intellectuals and artists, workers, women, student activists, clergy aligned to Liberation Theology, persecuted ethnic identities and nationalities (afro-american, amerindian, etc.)
Students are expected to read a series of testimonial texts, participate in class discussions, review and discuss articles assigned by the professor, make two formal presentations during the semester (panel + sesión teórica), and write short reaction papers ("reflexiones personales") to texts discussed in class which will be collected in the Personal Journal. Also, there will be a midterm and a final project (abstract-poster and paper). (Prereq.: Span 228, 291 or equivalent.)

Attendance is mandatory: More than 3 absences will lower the grade.
