M 7-9 PM MCEC 232

T-Th 11:20-12:35 McCOOK 205

Professor Gustavo Remedi

ext. 2148; office hrs.: T-Th 4:00-5:00 PM

The course follows SPAN 221 (Grammar & Composition) and is parallel to SPAN 228 (Readings in Hispanic Literature). The objective of this course is to help students to (a) get acquainted to a series of landmarks of Spanish /Latin American Cinema and the aesthetic concerns related to it, (b) to discuss them in terms of the social, historical and cultural questions they raise, and (c) to provide a place and occasion for the discussion of students' interpretations and ideas in Spanish.

Students are expected to watch a series of 12 films (approximately one film per week), be prepared to answer and discuss short questionaires about every film (handed out Mondays, in class), read some short supplementary articles—eventually handed out by the professor—, actively participate in class discussions (T-Th) and to make two formal oral presentations of a personal investigative report and analysis based on a particular film.

Students also need to produce a Personal Folder of short weekly entries or “reaction papers” . Each weekly entry must include a) bibliography, b) 3 annotated bibliographical reviews, c) 1-2 pages long short recation paper. The Folder will be collected twice: OCT. 8 and DEC. 3.
