Office Hrs. M-W 10-12 or by appointment
The course follows SPAN 221 (Grammar & Composition) and is parallel to SPAN 228 (Readings in Hispanic Literature). The objective of this course is to help students to (a) get acquainted to a series of landmarks of Spanish /Latin American Cinema and the aesthetic concerns related to it, (b) to discuss them in terms of the social, historical and cultural questions they raise, and (c) to provide a place and occasion for the discussion of students' interpretations and ideas in Spanish.
Students are expected to watch a series of films (approximately one film per week), be prepared to answer and discuss short questionaires about every film, read some short supplementary articles, actively participate in class discussions and make two formal oral presentations (one bibliographical review; one personal analysis and discussion of a film). Students also need to produce a Personal Journal with short weekly entries or reaction papers which will be collected every other week.
