Descripción del curso y objetivos

Spanish 101 is the first half of a two semester intensive course in Spanish. This first half is designed for students with no previous knowledge of Spanish. Everybody else should register in 102 or 201. This course aims at vocabulary building and helping you to develop the four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) within a limited range of topics and situations.

In order to develop your capacity to understand and speak Spanish classes are meant to be a Spanish only environment and are dedicated primarily to providing you with a space and opportunities to use the Spanish language, to listen and communicate with others, and to acquire and/or exchange ideas, opinions and information in Spanish. With experience in communicative situations, acquired knowledge and skills will grow, you will begin to feel much more comfortable and confident, and you will begin to speak Spanish more naturally. The teacher will always try to speak in Spanish to you, and will do everything possible to help you understand without using English.

Occasional lectures and videos on social and cultural topics (such as The Americas Series) will also be used as a basis for conversations, discussions and written assignments aimed at getting you acquainted with Spanish and Latin American societies and cultures. The tapes from Dos Mundos or the episodes of Destinos will give you additional practice in listening comprehension. You can watch Destinos and listen to the Dos Mundos tapes in the Library. Also, the library will broadcast Destinos and The Americas series into your student lounges.

Grammar will be explained in class very briefly. You are expected to study the textbook explanations, do the exercises in the textbook (specially the "blue pages") and the workbook at home. Look for your teacher's or the Graduate Fellow's assistance.

Second language acquisition is a slow, progressive and cumulative process. It is also the result of active participation —you learn from trying; you learn from experience. Daily attendance and adequate preparation are therefore essential. Any failure to do so will reflect on your performance as well as on your grades. If all these requirements cannot be met, the course should not be taken. Except for very extraordinary and grave circumstances, absences will not be excused. Every 3 absences lowers the final grade significantly. Also, there are no make ups at all, except for very extraordinary and grave circumstances.
