Sports Day At Byron College

Part 1 -- Alison

Tuesday, May 4, was Sports Day at Byron College! Girls and boys from third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades gathered at the beautiful public gymnasium of Kifissia (a toney Athenian suburb) for three hours of throwing, running, racing, jumping. Here's some of the highlights. Right: sack race -- it's harder than it looks!

The Girls' Sprints (a movie -- just move your mouse over the screen to play!)

Below right, the students of Perseas House (Alison's) get a pep-talk from Ms. Crossland and Mr, Chatwin. Byron College is divided up into houses, just like Hogwarts.

Parents were there to cheer their kids on; you're supposed to sit behind the House your kid is in, but as the day wore on parents migrated to the Perseas seats. That may have been because Perseas was winning, or it may have been because we had coffee runners!

The Long Jump was exciting -- here's Alison's good friend Elizabeth captured in mid-air!

The teachers participated as coaches -- unfortunately, however, not as athletes. (Much curiosity as to how they would've done -- but parents were reluctant to say anything for fear they'd be drafted!) Here's Ms. Crossland (Alison's teacher) looking perky.

Maybe the most exciting event of the day was the relay race -- run first separately, girls against girls, boys against boys. Rossan hands off to Alison who doesn't quite make the transfer -- you can see the baton rolling off her arm -- she had to stoop to grab it and Anna, friend but competition for the moment, almost overtook her! Then they ran a boys versus girls relay -- here's Jamie handing off the baton to

Victor and Anna (now teammate!) to Alison. Are you surprised that the girls won?

If so, you can check out the video of the girls versus boys sprints, which the girls also won (that's Xanthe blasting through the finish line at the end):

And here's Xanthe's victory in the girls' sprints.

At the end of the day, tired kids get their congratulations from the teachers, and then are forced to make one last mass run around the stadium!

That's Alison's Sports Day at Byron College! Stay tuned for pictures and reports from Caroline's Mini Olympics, scheduled for Friday, May 7!
