Polysiphonia plectocarpa C.W.Schneid. in C.W.Schneid. et Searles

Abstract

Eight more species of marine algae are reported from Bermuda for the first time, including Ulvella lens, three epiphytic species of Audouinella (Au. daviesii, Au. hormorhiza, and Au. hoytii), Gloiocladia atlantica, Corallophila verongiae, Chondria platyramea, and Polysiphonia plectocarpaC.W.Schneid. sp. nov. The new species is similar in vegetative characteristics to P. delicatula from the Indo-Pacific, but distinct in its reproductive features, particularly in the nature of the pericarps. One species of Audouinella not collected in Bermuda since the last century, Au. secundata, has been recollected and a list of other species in the genus previously known for the islands and collected again in this study is provided.

Key words: Audouinella, Bermuda, Chondria, Gloiocladia, Polysiphonia plectocarpa sp. nov., Rhodophyta.
