Bermuda Checklist

An Annotated Checklist and Bibliography of the Marine Macroalgae of the Bermuda Islands

C.W. Schneider (2003)

Nova Hedwigia 76: 275-361

Taenioma nanum (Kutz.) Papenf.

Introduction

Names listed under each species are the names under which the taxon was reported in the literature for Bermuda, and not all are taxonomic synonyms. For those taxa with a type locality in Bermuda, the name is preceeded by (*) and the page of the original description is noted. Those species still known only from Bermuda are followed by [ENDEMIC]. A question mark (?) prior to a species name means that the record is questionable and has not been verified from Bermuda. A question mark previous to a literature citation highlights either the original author's own uncertainty of identification or uncertainty of where an early record of a species might best be placed in current nomenclature. A few species and varieties are reported here for the first time from Bermuda. Standard forms of author names follow Brummitt and Powell (1992).

Two important exsiccatae including specimens from Bermuda were utilized in the production of this list and are abbreviated under species reference lists: P.B.-A. for Collins, Holden and Setchell (1895-1919), Phycotheca Boreali-Americana and A.A.B. for Farlow, Anderson and Eaton (1877-1889), Algae exsiccatae Americae Borealis. Five bound fascicles of P.B.-A.,nos. XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLI, XLII and XLIV, are devoted strictly to the "Algae of Bermuda," and these provide an invaluable reference source. Although 80 sets of P.B.-A. were prepared and distributed mostly in North America and Europe, many institutions never received complete sets, and some lack the Bermuda fascicles entirely. A.A.B. was limited to only 30 sets and lists of the species included in the exsiccata were published in Grevillea and Hedwigia without locality data. All of the Bermuda specimens distributed in this exsiccata are, however, found in Fascicle IV.

A great majority of the species in this checklist were reported in William Randolph Taylor's (1960) comprehensive marine flora for tropical and subtropical western Atlantic waters, but this reference is included under a particular species only when it included the first note of collections from Bermuda, or when a different name was used for a particular species listed herein. For the reference "Taylor 1960 [?in herb.]," the question mark signifies that voucher specimens have not been located in MICH for this first, and at times only, report of that species in Bermuda. Those "Taylor 1960 [in herb.]" citations without queries signify that species have been located and verified. Notes concerning the taxonomy or nomenclature of a great number of taxa are intercalated within the checklist, and are intended to illuminate problems or recent solutions associated with specific entities.

Plant authority citations follow:

A list of initials and abbreviations for all plant authorities, including those who described algae. This list generally disallows spaces between initials and surnames in authority abbreviations.
