Design and Construction of an Electric Furnace for Rock- and Paleomagnetic Investigations

Jude Kessler (2004)

Specifications:
  • max temp: 700 ºC
  • average heating rate of 10 - 20 ºC/min
  • controlled gas atmosphere to minimize chemical alteration of sample during heating
  • ability to heat /cool sample in a controlled field

testing the very first prototype Jude keeping a watchful eye on the temperature controller Model 1: Tmax = 560ºC, 140ºC to go...
one of the final heating runs - with upgraded insulation and a second heating wire the furnace reaches 800 C within approximately eight minutes. The final version of Jude's furnace, the quartz furnace tube is placed inside ceramic insulation and a m-metal shielding. A field coil inside the shielding allows for the application of a controlled magnetic field. Jude with the final version of his furnace.
