We spend the night at Sand Island at the banks of the San Juan. Quite unexpectedly this was probably the coldest night of the trip. This morning the stoves are covered with ice crystals. We never tell the students...

Last night, after dinner, we took a look at the petroglyphs in the cliffs behind our campsite. The sun was just right and the images of mountain sheep and meandering canyons stand out nicely against the desert varnish.

A quick drive brings us to our first hike of the day. We scale the slick sandstone cliffs of Comb Ridge and enjoy the view from the top. I am still getting a bit queasy, seeing all the students so close to the edge, but I keep my mouth shut. After all, this is one of the classic Roger Hooke memorial stops.

After a brief stop at the Goosenecks we have lunch at Muley Point before we start on our long drive south to Canyon de Chelly, where we camp at Spider Rock Campground.

We never told our students about the frost on the stoves...
