Before we leave Joshua Tree we clean out the
van, and take our picture in front of Skull Rock. A few short drives bring
us to an overlook of the San Andreas fault, show us the jointing patterns in
granite and a fairly well preserved mill used to crush rock from the
surrounding mines. We have lunch in 10000 palms and enjoy the cool shade of
a fan palm grove right off the San Andreas fault. Professor Geiss is hoping
for an earthquake... Our drive towards the Salton Sea shows us where most of the water from the Colorado ends up: plenty of irrigation ditches water date palms, grapes, vegetables and everything else. We stay at a nice tent campsite at the Salton Sea and some of us are brave enough to soak in the smelly salty water after a quite knowledgeable ranger assures us that a swim amongst the barnacles won't kill us. |
