Day 9: North Cascades Highway - War Creek

geology lecture Diable Lake

We follow WA20 across the North cascades and trade the rainforest for the semi-desert.  The Cascades shroud themselves in haze from forest fires we learn are hundreds of miles north, somewhere in Canada.  Nevertheless, we stop several times along the road to study metamorphic rocks and look at the blue waters of Diablo Lake.  We have lunch at Washington Pass, where we do our best to feed the jays.
It's Magee's birthday, so we stop in Twisp to buy ice cream, a birthday pie, and Mark finds a bunch of birthday candles. We camp at War Creek, a forest service campground nearby. Jeff and Mark explore the vicinity and return impressive sketches of bear scat.
