Owens (dry) Lake Introduction

Panoramic View of Owens Lake (ca.1911)

JSC image Owens Lake We studied the mineral-magnetic properties of deposited dust from collectors downwind (south and east of Owens (dry) Lake, one of the largest sources of fine grained dust in the United States ( Fig. 1 ) with 900,000 - 1,800,000t of fine dust generated each year [Gill and Gillette, 1991 ] or [ Reheis, 1997 ]. Samples were collected between 1991 and 1998 to quantify the role of Owens (dry) Lake (OdL) as a local and regional dust source. Samples were analyzed for the abundance and mineralogy of the magnetic component.
