Propósito del curso: This course serves as a bridge course between language classes and content-based (culture and literature) classes in Spanish. The purpose of the course is to introduce the student to various literary movements and genres, the historical contexts of the texts studied, and a diversity of critical and theoretical approaches to the study of cultural products.

Class work: You are expected to come to class having prepared the assigned readings and ready to discuss them in Spanish. Active class participation is expected of all. You will periodically be assigned the role of "discussion leader" of the class. That day you are expected to come to class with extra questions and ideas with which to begin discussion. You will be assigned daily participation grades based on the following scale:
0 - absent
2 - present, not prepared and did not participate
4 - participated only in small group discussions or when called upon
4.5 - participated frequently and voluntarily
5 - exceptional participation

Critical articles: You must use the MLA Bibliography database to find a critical article on two of the works read in class. You must read the article and write a 300-400 word summary of the main ideas of the article as well as your own evaluation of the article's usefulness. At least one of the articles must be in Spanish.

Projects: Except for the final project, which will be individual, all of the projects will be done in groups of 3-4. The individual project will count twice. You will receive individual instructions for these projects as each is due.

Absences and late work: Attendance to class is mandatory. You are allowed a total of four (excused and unexcused) absences during the semester (including recitations). After the fourth absence, a full point will be deducted from the final grade for each additional absence. Any exception to this rule will be made only in consultation with your advisor.
