Course Description
The aim of this course is to perfect knowledge and use of grammar, to build
a more sophisticated vocabulary, and to develop advanced writing skills. Class
discussions will be based on reading of literary and non-literary pieces. The
overall frame of reference is the literature, culture and history of the Spanish-speaking
world.
Grade distribution
Homework, Cultural Activities, and Participation 15%
Oral Presentation(s) 10 %
Grammar/Reading tests 20%
Compositions 30%
Final Exam 25%
Requirements
Language acquisition is a slow and gradual process. Daily attendance, adequate
preparation (a minimum of 2-3 hours for each class), and active participation
are therefore essential. Any failure to do so will reflect on the final grade.
Compositions
You will write 4 successive versions of 3 compositions, corresponding to chapters
of the texts to be covered.
1st version: reviewed by a classmate (A)
2nd version: reviewed by a classmate (B)
3rd version: corrected by the instructor using a correction key (C)
4th version: final version using instructors suggestions (D)
All writing assignments must be type-written and double spaced. Compositions
with numerous typos (more than 5) will be returned without comments or grade
and you will not have the opportunity to hand in a version C of your work. You
will proceed directly to COMPO D.
These compositions will be graded based on your individual work and consulting
with anyone will be considered violation of academic honor codes (native-speaker
roommates and more advanced students also banned).
The review with a partner (version A and B) will probably involve 45-60 min
meetings outside the class. You are responsible for keeping the schedule for
the first two versions, which should be dated and signed by your editor. Due
dates for compositions apply whether you come to class or not, at the beginning
of that particular class. Failure to hand in 3rd (C) or 4th (D) version on the
due date at the time of the class will result in 3 points deducted from your
final grade for each delay (from class to class). After a week, your essay will
not be accepted and your grade will be 0.
Together with 3rd (C) version you must hand in 1st (A) and 2nd (B) versions
commented by your classmate. Together with the 4th (C) version you must hand
in the 3 previous ones. Your grade will be based 50% on your final version and
50% on the other three.
Please note Essay 3 has only 3 versions (A, C, D)
Oral Presentations:
There will be two oral presentations in class. The first is an individual project,
assigned throughout the semester. The second, a group project, will be presented
in the last week of class.
Exams
There will be four exams including grammar and readings. No make-ups are given
without a compelling reason.
Homework
You will be responsible for studying grammar points, doing the assigned exercises,
readings, answer questions on them, etc. All homework listed in italics must
be written in a separate homework notebook, which should be brought to class
each day. These notebooks will be collected without notice and at your instructors
discretion. Late homework will not be accepted. The grammar component of the
course will be heavily based on your work outside the class, with some additional
practice in class and explanation of problematic points raised by your questions.
Note: All exercises from the grammar textbook have their answers in the answer
key at the back of the book. In these cases, you are to complete the exercises
FIRST, then correct them using the answer key. CORRECT WITH A DIFFERENT COLOR
PEN, so that it is obvious you followed instructions. While it may be tempting
from time to time just to copy the answers from the key, you will not be able
to gage your progress accurately and will have problems later in class and on
exams.
Attendance
No more than three unexcused absences are allowed. Each additional absence will
result in the lowering of the final grade by one step (eg. A to A-). Three late
arrivals (five minutes after beginning) count as one unex-cused absence and
excessive tardiness will be reflected in your participation grade.
Late homework will NOT be accepted.
