Propósito del curso:
To improve the student’s listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
and to provide the student with a stronger understanding of Hispanic cultures.
This course will emphasize proficiency in communication, meaning that the student
should leave the class able to communicate in a variety of settings, with an
appropriate level of grammatical accuracy. In this endeavor, we will focus on
seven communicative skills necessary to bring student to the advanced level
of speaking. By the end of the semester, the student should be able to perform
the following skills with grammatical accuracy: describe and speak about the
present; compare; react and recommend; narrate in the past; talk about likes
and dislikes; hypothesize; and narrate in the future.

Class work: This includes all quizzes, announced and unannounced, workbook,
other homework, and written work done and collected in class.
Pruebas: You will have a vocabulary quiz at the beginning of every chapter
and a verb quiz every Friday, unless there is another quiz or exam that day.
There will be other quizzes as deemed necessary.
Cuaderno de ejercicios: When doing the exercises in your workbook, you
must first do them in pen (not red) or pencil, then correct those exercises
with answers in the back using a red pen. You will turn in your workbook at
the beginning of each class it is due.
Actividades culturales: You will be required to attend a minimum of three
cultural activities offered by different departments and organizations during
the semester. After attending the event, you must turn in a 150-word reaction
paper (typed, double spaced) about the event. You will be given a list of possible
activities weekly.
Participation: You are expected to come to class having studied the
necessary grammar and done the necessary work in order to participate actively
in Spanish. Asking questions in Spanish, participating in large and small group
work, and answering questions in Spanish will be expected.
Presentation: You will have one final group presentation that will require you
to successfully perform the seven communicative skills that are the focus of
the semester.
CD-rom and website: The CD-rom contains extra materials which you will
use to practice the grammar, vocabulary, culture, listening and reading skills
associated with each chapter of the Punto y aparte text. It is for your use
at home, and from time to tme you will be asked to hand in a "progress
report" of your work with this item.
The website also contains extra grammar and vocabulary quizzes that are graded
instantly for you, as well as additional cultural activities and links to important
resources in Spanish on the web. Of particular interest to you for this course
are the sections on "Lo hispano en los EEUU", which contain links
to help you complete the internet activities assigned in the corresponding section
of the Punto y aparte main text.
To access the website, go to www.mhhe.com/puntoyaparte. There, click on "Student
Edition" (in the lower left corner). There, click on "site map"(in
the upper right corner). There, click on "Choose one", in the upper
left corner. A menu will drop down to allow you to choose the chapter you wish
to work on. After choosing the appropriate chapter, you will be given a menu
to allow you to choose the language skill or cultural activity you wish to work
on at that time.
Absences and late work: Attendance to class is mandatory. You are allowed
a total of four (excused and unexcused) absences during the semester. After
the fourth absence, a full point will be deducted from the final grade for each
additional absence. Any exception to this rule will be made only in consultation
with your advisor.
Late homework will NOT be accepted.
