Cross-Country Races At New England NCAAs

The 1999 NCAA New England Division III Regional Cross-Country Championships at UMASS Dartmouth for the Trinity Cross-Country teams was a day of broken personal records for some and a solid way to end the 1999 racing season for many.
The Trinity Men's team placed 8th overall, with the women coming in 17th. "It was a mix of a lot of things," said Junior Todd Marklez of Homer, AK, speaking of the shocking 14th place position he earned in a time of 25:07. "The [previous] racing and the training all kind of came together. I felt that coach had prepared us on that day, and it helped out a lot to have so many people there which kept me going during the race." Full story...

Football Crushes Wesleyan Cardinals

So, another Homecoming Weekend came and went. For those of you who are now looking back on Saturday as a complete haze, funny, but still a haze, let me try and help you clear up a few questions you may have regarding this crazy weekend. Yes, you did pass out Friday night with a beer in your hand and woke up Saturday morning drinking that same beer. No, that guy from Shakedown Street at AD wasn't Jerry Garcia's long-lost twin brother Terry. And yes, there was a football game going on behind you as you stumbled around from car to car, pretending to be friends with people so you could get a beer or a Bloody Mary. And no, all that cheering you heard wasn't because you had just completed your fifteenth keg stand of the day; I don't care if you broke your personal record. All that cheering was for our Bantam football team, who took on Wesleyan and broke a few records of their own on the field. Full story...

Men's Soccer Makes A Run To The ECAC Finals

The Trinity Men's Soccer team's record-breaking season ended on Sunday when the Bantams fell to the Middlebury Panthers in the ECAC Finals by a score of 3-1. The boys made a remarkable run, earning second place in New England, cracking the Top 25 in the end-of-season poll, and dispatching two teams in the ECAC Playoffs before falling to Middlebury. The team's thirteen wins (11 regular, 2 postseason) is a new school record, one that will be tough to match in years to come.

The Bants playoff week started this past Wednesday. Trinity, being the third seed in this eight team tournament, played sixth-seeded Plymouth State. Early on, it was clear that the Bantams were the superior team. Morgan Sandell '03, one of the most talented goal-scorers in New England, netted the first one, nodding in a cross from Caley Iandiorio '01. Brett MacQuarrie '01 scored the second at the end of the first half, a goal which seemed to demoralize the outmatched Plymouth State. The Trinity defenders held down the fort for the remainder of the match, helping Tom Hambrick-Stowe '01 earn yet another shutout. Full story...

Trinity Sports Preview Continued: Winter 1999-2000

In 1999-2000, the Trinity College women's squash program will have one of its deepest and most talented teams in recent memory. With eight returning varsity letterwinners, including two All-Americans, the Bantam women's squash program, under the direction of Head Coach Wendy Bartlett (16th season), is on a path toward its 20th consecutive winning season.

The Bantams will have to recover from the loss of Paige Vollmer, Betsy Paluck, and Sarah Burbank to graduation. Still, six of the top nine players are back, led by three-time All-American senior co-captain Gail Davie and two-time All-American junior Janine Thompson. Davie posted a 15-5 singles mark two winters ago and is healthy after missing the majority of last season with an injury. Thompson had a sensational sophomore campaign, winning 17 of 22 singles matches, advancing to the USWISRA Singles Tournament quarterfinals and capturing the USSRA Singles Championship.

Senior co-captain Randy DePree has been a major contributor to the squash program in her previous three years. She has compiled a 41-19 record in her career, including a 9-3 dual mark in 1998-99. Also returning are highly regarded sophomores Alice Affleck, Mollie Anderson, and Samantha Lewins, who totaled 27 wins among them in 1998-99.

Bartlett is excited about the upcoming season, particularly with the momentum gained from last season's strong fourth-place finish at the Howe Cup. "We have veteran players who have experienced success and know what it takes to achieve it." She adds, "It will be key for us to mix in a talented incoming freshman class with the returning players to keep our success going this season and in the years ahead." Full story...
