"Inc."s Eat America's FreedomsGovernment is, in a sense, a form of corporation. The reverse is also true. Both are large, powerful entities controlling often vast sums of money, wherein the individuals involved are absolved from accountability for the actions of the organization. The legitimacy of government often creates slightly better public relations, and both certainly have much better public relations than organized crime organizations which can at times function as both governments and corporations. It's Hard to Study Without Heat: The Complaints Of One StudentThis past weekend was plenty of fun. We had the traditional burning of theŠ what was it this year? A "W?" We had the Homecoming football game, in which I hear we beat Wesleyan. (GO TEAM!) The parties this weekend were finally something more than face-painting, karaoke or inflatable obstacle courses. On the whole, I found my faith in the ability of Trinity College to throw a party on the rise. Full story... |

Out Of My Way Coffee-BoyCOFFEE. My first thought in the morning. The only thought that gets me out of bed. I am an addict. Most every morning I stumble down to the Cave to get my daily fix. I go right to the lovely large decanters, percolating faithfully everyday. I glance at the flavored selection. If it is Kona, I'm all over it. I suggest avoiding the Chocolate Raspberry, very weird coffee breath after that flavor. Full story... |
Faculty Views: Sexual Assault Is Out Of Control At TrinityYou've probably seen the posters around campus portraying rape statistics. Why is this necessary, you may ask? Because out of every ten raped women, only one reports it. And one in four women are raped, and males represent 1-6% of all rape victims. On this campus I have heard of four rapes this semester, which means, statistically, there have been thirty-six unreported rapes. The students who come to talk to me and Marilyn Cardone (Sexual Assault Counselor) always tell us of other young women they know who've been sexually assaulted but won't come forward. Full story... |

Letter to the Editor: A Few Simple Things Trinity Can Do To Market Itself To The Outside World BetterI have a hot marketing concept for Trinity. Here's how it goes:
The slogans fly out of the wind machine: College at the Cutting Edge; Liberal Arts With a Lot of Extra Stuff; A College on the Edge of Not Being a College! |
Letter to the Editor: A Response From Evan Dobelle: Trinity is Doing Great Things, But Has Much More To DoHank Lewis's recent Tripod column deserves a thoughtful response from me. First, I believe there must have been a misunderstanding about my interview published by the Tripod. For that article, I simply responded to a series questions directed to me by the paper, and my responses were billed as remarks addressing the "state of the college." My comments during the interview reflected my views on the topics raised by reporters on that particular day, not my assessment of the critical issues facing Trinity at this time. Full story... |

Letter to the Editor: Multiculturalism Questions Have Already Asked and AnsweredPlease note that I write this letter in my capacity as an alumna of the College, not in my official capacity as Assistant Dean for Student Services and Director of Multicultural Development.I read in utter disgust the "Faculty Views" opinion piece in the November 2, 1999, edition of The Tripod. I find it amazing that years after being addressed through personal meetings and other for a the author of that piece raises the same issues. But then, my mother always told me that there would forever be people who will never be satisfied with anything. Full story... |
Letter to the Editor: Accusations Of Racism Still StandIt has been brought to my attention that my Faculty Opinion column from two weeks ago might have been off base in the sense that I was criticizing President Dobelle for his remarks on the "State of the College," when in actuality he had not intended for his comments to be framed as such by The Tripod. Letter to the Editor: Minimum Wage Law Limits An Employers' Right To BargainSuppose that a politician suggested the following measure: The current labor shortage, he explains, is putting a strain on businesses, who now have to pay higher wages to keep their workers. So in order to help them, he concludes, we need to impose government-mandated wage caps; he calls this proposal a "maximum wage." Full story... |
Letter to the Editor: Mr. Reynolds Criticism of Opinion Journalism Unfair, InsultingThis is in response to Mr. Reynolds' article tilted "The Trustees are misunderstood." We found it impossible not to respond to such an insulting article. We find it interesting that a person who thinks so poorly of "opinion journalism in action" would choose to take up space in our opinion section with an article of his own. Like Mr. Reynolds, we gather that the purpose of opinion journalism is "to effect informed debate by provocative opinion;" unlike Mr. Reynolds, we view this aim in a more positive light. Letter to the Editor: SGA Had No Knowledge Of EmbezzlementAs Vice President of Finance for the Student Government Association, SGA, I feel that it is my responsibility to respond to the letter written to The Tripod last week by Lincoln Heineman '01, concerning the possibility that SGA had knowledge that a student was embezzling funds from Trinity College.
