Trinity Alumni Return For Homecoming Weekend

On November 12th to 14th Trinity held its annual Homecoming Weekend. Alumni from as far back as the class of 1960 came back to the campus to meet friends, former classmates, and to attend the numerous events organized by the college.

Registration for Homecoming started early Friday morning. The Alumni Office had prepared a Message Board to facilitate meetings between people and had prepared tours showing off the renovations and the new projects on campus this year.

In addition, the alumni who arrived at Trinity early on Friday had the opportunity to visit classes in a number of departments. Later in the evening the traditional burning of the "W" brought together current students and alumni on the Main Quad. They gave their support as they cheered for Trinity's football team, which was to play against Wesleyan the next day. The last events on Friday night were two concerts held at the Bistro and the Goodwin Theater.

The Bistro hosted an acappella concert by the Trinitones and Colgate University's Colgate Thirteens, while the Austin Arts Center was the site of "Stepping into Fall" ‹ a music and dance collection choreographed by Lesley Farlow and Abdoulaye Sylla. Before the football game on Saturday many open houses were held for everyone willing to visit and get acquainted with projects at Trinity, such as the students' participation in the Boys and Girls Club. At the same time, in other parts of the campus, luncheons were organized for the classes of 1970, 1975 and 1996, '97, '98 and '99. Another important event took place right before the game ‹ the rededication of the Jesse Field, which is now to be called the Jesse/Miller Field, in honor of Don Miller, the most successful football coach in Trinity's sports history. Once again, the football game was probably the most visited event of the weekend. The victory over Wesleyan added to the enthusiasm of old friends and classmates meeting after not having seen each other for a long time.

When asked what the most exciting part of coming back to Trinity was, people came up with a variety of answers, from "meeting with friends" to "seeing the football game". Bernard Gilbert, a graduate of the class of '61, says that one of the things that have made him and many others come back every year is "seeing young people have fun while pursuing their education".
