s if the U.S military was not already over committed the United States naval and air forces are faced with yet another duty, patrolling the straights of Taiwan. There is trouble between China and Taiwan, and America has come to the rescue. China has commenced military maneuvers, known as war games, directed at Taiwan. Chinese missiles have been fired off the coast of Taiwan, and military deployments have taken place. These belligerent acts are warnings to the Taiwanese citizens. China is advising Taiwanese voters not
to support the incumbent president Lee Teng-hui in this week's presidential election. The election is due to take place on March 23. President Lee is predicted to win the upcoming election, but the Chinese government is concerned that Lee may win over 50% of the popular vote. If that occurs Lee will be able to declare complete independence from China, claiming that the majority of the population supports him. Chinese officials claim that Lee promotes a complete split between China and Taiwan, Lee has denied these alle gations. Although China and Taiwan have been separate since the 1949 civil war China still considers Taiwan to be part of China.
U.S air craft carriers are in place and another ship is expected to arrive by March 23. This will represent the largest U.S naval deployment in the region since the vietnam war. It isn't the first time American forces have responded to Chinese aggression that was directed at Taiwan. In 1954 and 1955, U.S forces defended Taiwan from Chinese aggression after China bombed the Taiwanese island of Quemory. Most recently China and Taiwan have ordered the evacuation of the front line islands, due to Chinese war games and military maneuvers. Chinese chief of staff of the Peoples Liberation Army spoke out against U.S intervention. He believes that China must "stand guard against western enemies trying to divide the country."
It appears that the Cold War didn't crumble with the Soviet Union. China's communist government is in conflict with American democracy, therefore the U.S is attempting to protect Taiwan from the sinister communists. But, the United States has no right to get itself involved in another international affair. President Nixon promised China that the U.S wouldn't recognize Taiwan.
The dispute between China and Taiwan should be left between the two parties involved and the U.S should abide by what one of it's former presidents promised. The United States needs to realize that it is not the great peace maker of the world. Other countries have problems that it can not solve. Over commitment has always been a problem with the United States. At the present time there are American troops in Bosnia, the Middle East, and now the straights of Taiwan. American involvement and intervention has gone too far. Is it going to take World War Three to make America realize that it can't solve everybody's problems?
