A Free Range For Dorks

The Internet: My Personal Opinion

o k, lets get real. Is the WWW really for computer nerds, a free roam range for the socially inept and computer-coordinated? It seems like the internet is like a big romper room for dorks. In the past, these unfortunates were relegated to the chem lab, to managing the math team, and cleaning up after the pep rally. Now adays, however, they have a new outlet. They have taken over cyberspace, and a battle, the likes of which no one has ever seen, is brewing in the computer labs and workstations around the country, yes, and even the world, for the complete control of the bandwidths that make up the internet. You see, it is us normals, we non-hacking, email using, not-UNIX knowing, non-CS denizens of the web that are the last lines of defense against the growing tide of netizens that plan to change the WWW into their own personal FTP site.

Many pages on the WWW deal with nothing but complete crap. They are simply there to attest to the HTML ability of the maker, nothing more. Computer guys, and I do mean guys, because on my forrays to the Internet it has become crystal clear-- women do not abound in cyberspace, seem to have a penchant for utilizing the WWW for evil purposes, like keeping track of every Online Mag, Ezine, and each new shareware app for their Macs. This has got to cease! And it will, thanks to the efforts of John Q. Netizen. Yes, it will be the simple folk that lead them to salvation. . . every day folks like myself are going to help shape a warm and fuzzy future for the Net, rescuing it from the evil, malign clutches of the computer dorks.

It will be this new influx of users who will fuel the change of the WWW, more than any corporate homepage or newsgroup ever could. With our new and novel, and yes, sometimes stupid ideas we will, in effect bring about the renaissance of the Internet.

The Web savvy will take on a new meaning. They will be those who helped to restructure the Internet into a new being, a friendly, useful, and interesting thing.

But that will come in time. The Internet isn't just for those pursuits, not by a long stretch. Perusing the web this last weekend on my newly virally protected computer running Netscape 2.0, and loving it, I came across a few sites that made me a little gurgly inside. These sites are creative for the sake of fun, for the sake of stupidity, and for the sake of no corporate sponsor.
