Letter 3
In response to "Christianity Politicized" by Jack Hoblitzell
Freedom to practice the religion of your choice and the separation
of church and state are two of the most important principles that this
nation was founded on...freedom of religion and freedom from religion.
All religious faiths in this country that actively try to convert people
or become involved in secular issues run the risk of a public backlash.
You are correct to be frustrated with the hipocritical double standards
that do exist, but you must remember that this is a direct result of an
aggressive "religious right" in this country. The double standards are
the backlash against impositions upon, or atempted interference with,
other people's freedom by evangelical Christians.
The best way to go about "de-politicizng Christianity" is for
Christians, of all denominations, to respect other people's freedom and
to stay out of politics. I am a Christian, but Christianity, and
Christian morals, are not universal.
