Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
I have just come across an review of the film "The
adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Dessert" published by your
organisation. It was written by Gavin Andrews. I am currently doing
my final high school years in Australia and am studying the film
in English Literature. I would like to take the approach that the
film was intended for entertainment, pure and simple. The published
review, (I have copied it below for your information) seems to vindicate
my opinion. My problem is that my teacher feels that the film is
sexist, (there are no normal women portrayed - the casino owner
is a lesbian, the women from broken hill is a charicature, and the
mail order bride is a hore) racist, the aboriginals are depicted
as stupid and the gay aboriginal is supposedly given the worst costume)
and intolerant. She feels that no film is made purely for entertainment
and always carries much deeper meaning. I can see her point, but
do believe that this was not the directors or writers intention.
If any of your reviewers or Gavin Andrews himself could help me
at all with augments that could perhaps convince her I would be
eternally grateful

Unfortunately, as happens quite often, the author of that article,
Gavin Andrews, has graduated, and is unavailable for comment. Furthermore,
no one on the staff has the knowledge of this movie necessary to
help. You are, of course, free to use the article for help. We give
our most humble apologies, and wishes of good luck
