Orientation and Housing
New York City is a "walking city." Bring "sensible"
shoes for your Orientation Week! You will enjoy walking tours of neighborhoods like
Chinatown, Harlem, and Greenwich Village. You will visit landmarks like Central Park,
Times Square, and South Street Seaport. A trip to Ellis Island will afford a close-up look
at the Statue of Liberty and a great view of the New York City skyline. You will visit
museums such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of African Art, and the
Guggenheim Soho, along with smaller galleries in areas like Chelsea, the East Village, and
Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. Our mode of travel is the New York City subway, much cleaner and
safer than years ago. You will learn to navigate the subway system, with an emphasis
placed on personal safety in an urban environment.
Housing will be provided at the de Hirsch Residence at the 92nd Street Y on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It is located on Lexington Avenue between 91st and 92nd streets, close to subways and buses, and convenient to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, and "Museum Mile." The residence is arranged similar to a dormitory with single and double rooms, kitchens on every floor, TV rooms, musical instrument practice rooms, and a library. The Y is a secure facility with 24-hour security guards and picture IDs for all of its residents. Guests must sign in and out at the front desk.
In addition to housing students enrolled in the Trinity/La MaMa program, the 92nd Street Y is home to students enrolled at other New York colleges, including many who are visiting from throughout the world. The Y is a busy facility, offering an extensive continuing-education program, chamber music concerts, dance concerts, lecture series, and celebrity interviews. And, of course, as a Y, there are health club facilities that residents may use at a special rate.
