TRINITY WOMEN'S TENNIS BEATS
BOWDOIN IN NCAA FIRST ROUND
Williamstown, Mass.- Sophomore Sarah Krueger (Burlington, Vt.) and freshman Diana Dreyfus (Scarsdale, N.Y.)won their singles matches in straight sets and combined for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, leading the Trinity College Bantams to a 6-3 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament this afternoon at Williams College.
Trinity, ranked No. 4 in the Northeast and No. 14 in the nation, improves to 12-3 for the season and will play at Williams, ranked No. 1 in the nation, tomorrow in the second round. Bowdoin, ranked No. 5 in the Northeast and No. 18 in the nation, finishes its season at 10-8.
The match started off with an exciting doubles battle. Tied at 1-1 after completion of two doubles matches, it all came down to #1 position that was deadlocked at eight games a piece. The similar happened the last time the two teams faced each other, and just like in the past, the Trinity duo of senior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.) and junior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (North Attleboro, Mass.) came on top to give their squad a 2-1 lead heading into the singles.
Led by sophomore No. 1 Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.), the Bantams scored impressive wins at four singles spots. Three of those matches went into close third sets, but Trinity previaled in each.
