FRESHMAN VOLLMER VAULTS TRINITY WOMEN'S 
SQUASH TO WIN OVER TOP-RANKED HARVARD

Hartford, Conn.- Freshman Meridy Vollmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the
deciding match, 3-1, at the No. 7 position to lead the Trinity College
Bantams to a 5-4 win over the visiting Harvard University Crimson in women's
squash action this afternoon at the newly dedicated George A. Kellner Squash
Center.
	Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improves to 6-0 for the season.
Harvard, ranked No. 1 in the nation, drops to 4-1.  The Bantams' only loss
in the past two seasons was to Harvard in the 2000-01 Women's
Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) National Championships (Howe Cup)
last season.
	The teams were deadlocked at 2-2 after the first round of matches,
which included a 3-1 triumph by Bantam freshman Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu,
Malaysia), the No. 2 player in the nation, over Harvard senior captain and
No. 5-ranked Margaret Elias (Philadelphia, Pa.).  
	Trinity and Harvard also split the next four matches to make the
score 4-4 with just the No. 7 contest still under way.  The second slate of
matches featured a 3-0 win by Trinity sophomore Amina Helal (Manchester,
England), the No. 1 player in the nation, over Harvard sophomore Louisa Hall
(Haverford, Pa.), ranked No. 3 in the nation.
	Vollmer won the first game of her match against Crimson junior Ella
Witcher (Calgary, Alberta), but Witcher rebounded to take the second game.
In front of the entire enthusiastic crowd of over 800 spectators, Vollmer
took the final two games including a 9-4 triumph in the final game over
Witcher, the No. 26 player in the nation.
	Trinity freshman Bronwyn Cooper (Harrare, Zimbabwe) downed Harvard
freshman Stephanie Hendricks (Haverford, Pa.) at the No. 6 position, while
Bantam sophomore Clare Austin (Banbury, England), the No. 27 player in the
nation, ousted Crimson sophomore Kristin Wadhwa (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.),
3-0, at the No. 9 spot.
