TRINITY WOMEN'S SQUASH GETS PAST
PRINCETON IN HOWE CUP SEMIS
New Haven, Conn. - Sophomore Clare Austin (Banbury, England) dominated her match at the No. 5 position to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 8-1 win over the Princeton University Tigers in the semifinal round of the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) Howe Cup Team Championships.
The Trinity women, which are ranked No. 1 in the nation and seeded first in the tourney, improve their perfect record to 10-0, while No. 4-ranked Princeton falls to 8-4 Trinity will face No. 2 Harvard, who downed No. 3 Pennsylvania, 6-3, in their semifinal match, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Austin won, 9-0, 9-4, 9-4, at No. 5, ,joining senior captain and No. 2 player Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and freshmen Pam Saunders (Harrare, Zimbabwe) and Carolynne Minkowski (Baltimore, Md.) as 3-0 victors for the Bantams. Sophomore Amy Brown (West Hartford, Conn.) came back from a 2-0 deficit in which she had scored just two total points, to win a 3-2 match at the No. 9 position for the Bantams.
Thompson, ranked No. 7 in the nation defeated Princeton senior Meredith Quick (Lakewood, Colo.), the No. 8 player in the nation, while Trinity freshman Amina Helal (Manchester, England) downed Tiger senior Julia Beaver (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 3-2, in a matchup of the No. 2 and No. 1 players in the nation, respectively.
