HARVARD UPSETS TRINITY WOMEN'S
SQUASH IN HOWE CUP FINALS
New Haven, Conn. - Junior Carlin Wing (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came back from a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 win at No. 3 to lead the Harvard University Crimson to a 6-3 win over the Trinity College Bantams in the finals of the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) Howe Cup Team Championships this afternoon at Yale. The Trinity women, which were ranked No. 1 in the nation and seeded first in the tourney, fall to 10-1 for the season, while No. 2-ranked Harvard finishes its season at 9-1.
Wing lost the first two games, 9-3 and 9-7, to Trinity freshman Pamela Saunders (Harrare, Zimbabwe), and was trailing, 8-6, in the third game before rallying to score four straight points in that game. She won the last two games, 9-2, 9-2, to give Harvard a 1-0 lead before any of the other matches had started. The Crimson won the next four matches to clinch the title, but Trinity rallied to take three out of the last four matches.
Trinity freshman No. 1 Amina Helal (Manchester, England), the No. 2-ranked player in the nation, won the only Bantam 3-0 match, outscoring Harvard freshman Louisa Hall (Haverford, Pa.), 9-5, 9-4, 9-6. Trinity junior Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe) won, 3-2, at No. 4 despite dropping the first two games, while freshman Sarah Frank (Philadelphia, Pa.) won a 3-2 match at No. 7 for the Bantams.
At the awards ceremony following the match, Trinity was presented with the Clarence Chaffee Trophy, which goes to the team that exhibits the highest level of sportsmanship, teamwork, character, friendliness, work ethic, and improvement. The Bantams also received the Barhite Award for winning the Intercollegiate Dual Match title. Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett, is 8-0 in duals with one match remaining, but has clinched the title with a regular season at Harvard.
