2000-01 Women's Squash Outlook

In 2000-01, the Trinity College women's squash program will welcome back five starters from last year’s team, which completed one of the best seasons in the program’s history. Led by senior co-captain, three-time All-American, and Constable Tournament Champion Janine Thompson, the Bantam women’s squash program, under the direction of Head Coach Wendy Bartlett (17th season), is focused on recording its 21st consecutive winning season.

The Bantams will have to recover from the graduations of Gail Davie, a four-time All-American and Trinity’s Senior Co-Female Athlete of the Year in 1999-00, and Randy DePree, Trinity’s all-time career leader in victories. But Thompson and juniors Samantha Lewins and Mollie Anderson, three of Trinity’s top five players from last season, give the Bantams an outstanding trio at the top of its lineup.

Thompson, one of the premier players in women’s intercollegiate squash, posted an 11-5 record last season, including an impressive performance to become the first Trinity player to win the prestigious Constable Tournament at Princeton. Lewins had a sensational sophomore campaign, winning 15 of 21 singles matches to earn second-team All-American honors. Anderson led the Bantams in wins last season with an 18-3 mark, including a perfect 15-0 record in dual matches.

Sophomore Clare Austin was impressive in her rookie season, totaling 17 wins in 20 matches, while junior Amanda Todd and sophomore Amy Brown gained valuable experience at No.’s 8 and 9 last winter. Senior Sarah Greenwood, 12-3 in her career and sophomore Suzanne Schwartz will compete with a solid freshman class for the remaining starting positions among the top nine.

Bartlett is excited about the upcoming season, particularly with the momentum gained from last season's strong third-place finish at the Howe Cup. "We have veteran players who have experienced success and know what it takes to achieve it," she says. "It will be key for us to mix in a talented incoming freshman class with the returning players to keep our success going this season and in the years ahead."
