TRINITY WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS SHORT AT WILLIAMS

Williamstown, Mass.- Senior co-captain forward Stacey Starner (Windham, N.H.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Williams College Ephs to a 3-1 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity falls to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NESCAC with its second loss in a row, while the Ephs improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the league with their first win in the last three games.

Williams went ahead, 2-0, at the half on goals by Starner and sophomore midfielder Brittany Esty (Park City, Utah).  Trinity junior forward Lindsay Aquilina (Williamsville, N.Y.) got Trinity on the board 1:54 into the second half, taking a pass from classmate Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury. Conn.) on a high bounce ahead of the pack and lofting it over the Eph goalie and into the net.

The Ephs went ahead by two goals once more when Starner assisted junior forward Claire Samuel (Cleveland, Ohio) on a two-on-one break.  The Bantams nearly closed to within one with 7:30 remaining when freshman forward Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, Conn.) found herself ahead of all the Eph defenders, including the keeper, but her shot was caught up to by a Williams back before it could reach the goal.

Bantam sophomore goalies Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.) combined for 12 saves, including seven by Mahoney in the second half.  Williams senior keeper Abigail Jackson (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) had three saves for Williams, which outshot Trinity, 30-12.
