BUZZELL POWERS BANTAMS TO OVERTIME
WIN OVER WESLEYAN WOMEN’S SOCCER

Middletown, Conn.- Freshman forward Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, Conn.) scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 3-2 win over the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s soccer action this afternoon.

Trinity improves to 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals fall to 2-10-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the league.  Trinity will qualify for its second straight conference championship tournament with a win or a tie on Saturday against Amherst, or a loss by Bates against Bowdoin on Saturday.

Buzzell netted the clincher 5:05 into the extra period off a cross by junior back Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, Conn.) on a free kick.  She received the pass in a crowd in front of the goalie, managing to push the ball past the Cardinal keeper and into the net.

Trinity held a 1-0 lead at the half, thanks to a long range blast by Doyle in the 14th minute.  The score did not change until Buzzell headed in the second Trinity goal on a cross from sophomore forward Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) with 11:21 remaining in the game.  Wesleyan scored goals nine minutes apart, tying the contest on a goal by freshman forward Natalie Cohen (Acton, Mass.) with 1:47 left in regulation.

Bantam sophomore Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) had 10 saves, while freshman Christina Farrell (Setauket, N.Y.) stopped 17 shots for Wesleyan.  Trinity outshot the Cardinals, 25-16.
