TRINITY WOMEN’S SOCCER LOSES AT TUFTS
Medford, Mass.- Senior Sara Standish (Brunswick, Maine) provided the game-winning strike in the 65th minute to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 2-1 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s soccer action this afternoon. Trinity falls to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in the NESCAC and Tufts improves to 8-4 and 5-3 in the league with its second win in three days.Trinity played impressively in the first half, taking the lead in the 18th minute. Freshman midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) outraced the Tufts sweeper on the left flank and played into the top of the box. Classmate Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) beat the sliding keeper to the ball and chipped the ball over her reach and into the net.
Tufts junior Alle Sharlip (Kentfield, Calif.) fed freshman Becky Greenstein (Newton, Mass.) with the game-winner in the first stanza’s final two minutes. Greenstein beat Trinity freshman goalie Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.), forced into her first career start due to injuries and academic commitments, into the lower left corner of the goal. Trinity junior sweeper Meg Roscio (Glastonbury, Conn.) got her leg on the ball for the back save but it deflected into the top of the net instead.
The Bantam offense picked up the intensity in the last 10 minutes but failed to convert on a number of scoring opportunities. Tufts goalie Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, Minn.) finished with four saves as did Mahoney.
