GRATRY AND MILLER SCORE FIVE IN TRINITY WOMEN’S LAX WIN SEASON OPENING WIN
Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore attack Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio) totaled five goals and three assists to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 15-6 victory over the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in the women’s lacrosse season opener for both teams this afternoon at Robin L. Sheppard Field.
Trinity scored the first three goals of the game in the opening 1:30, including two scores by junior midfielder Betsy Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I.), and led, 5-1 after 10 minutes of play. The Warriors closed to within two goals at 5-3 when freshman midfielder Alana Florian (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore attack Sharon Kilpatrick (Londonderry, N.H.) scored 21 seconds apart just after the 20 minute mark of the first half.
The Bantams held off the Eastern Connecticut rally, and netted four unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 9-3 lead into the break. Trinity senior middie Elizabeth Miller (Weston, Mass.) had three goals in the first half, while junior goalie Erica Blozie (South Windsor, Conn.) made 11 first-half saves to keep the Warriors within striking distance. The Bantams put the game out of reach with six straight scores over the first 21:29 of the second frame for a total of 10 consecutive Trinity goals. Gratry scored three of the six goals during the stretch for the Bantams.
Miller tied for the team lead with five goals and added one assist, while senior attack Laura Davis (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman middie Kara Takesuye (Chevy Chase, Md.) notched a goal and an assist apiece for the Bantams. Senior co-captain midfielder Katie Bowman (Summit, N.J.) recorded two assists, and junior Alexandra Benjamin (Weston, Mass.) stopped four Eastern Connecticut shots. Florian paced the Warriors with three goals, while sophomore attack Mo Deegan (Westport, Conn.) scored two goals, and Blozie made 26 saves.
