BOWDOIN STOPS TRINITY WOMEN’S LAX
IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
Hartford Conn. – Junior midfielder Angela King (Limington, Maine) tallied four goals and two assists to lead the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 14-8 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s lacrosse action this afternoon at Robin L. Sheppard Field.
Trinity, ranked No. 17 in the nation, finishes the regular season with a 9-6 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the NESCAC, while the Polar Bears, ranked No. 5 in New England and No. 16 in the nation, close the regular season at 9-5 overall and 5-4 in the league. The Bantams have qualified for a second straight NESCAC Championship Tournament and will play tomorrow at noon at the the loser of the Amherst/Williams game to be played this afternoon.
Bowdoin opened up a 2-2 game midway through the first half with five unanswered goals, including three by junior attacker Hilary Abrams (Lakeville, Conn.), to take a 7-5 lead with 5:22 before intermission. Trinity sophomore attacker Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio) netted the first of her team-high, three goals to pull the Bantams within four before the half.
The Polar Bears erupted for six more goals in a row to go ahead, 13-3, with 16:39 on the clock, before Trinity rallied to net three goals in four minutes and cut the lead to 13-6 with 10:43 to play. Bowdoin slowed the play down for the final 10 minutes, although a frenetic Trinity defense forced several Polar Bear turnovers down the stretch. The Bowdoin defense answered, however, preventing Trinity to cut into the lead until the 3:10 mark on a coast-to-coast sprint by Bantam senior defense Maria Lingnau (Mendham, N.J.). The teams traded goals in the closing minutes for a 14-8 final.
Trinity junior Alexandra Benjamin (Weston, Mass.) made eight saves, while Polar Bear sophomore Kendall Cox (Guilford, Conn.) stopped 12 shots. Bantam senior co-captain Katelyn Bowman (Summit, N.J.) recorded a goal and an assist, while Abrams scored four times, and junior middie Amanda Burrage (Brookline, Mass.) totaled two goals and one assist for Bowdoin.
