TRINITY WOMEN’S LACROSSE HOLDS
ON AGAINST WESLEYAN
Hartford, Conn. - Freshman Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio) scored seven goals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 12-9 win over the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s lacrosse action this afternoon.
Trinity improves to 8-5 overall and 3-5 in the NESCAC, snapping a three game losing streak, while Wesleyan falls to 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the league. The Bantams will clinch a spot in the NESCAC Championship Tournament with a win at Bowdoin on Saturday or a loss by Tufts in either of its two remaining games.
Holding a 2-1 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the first half, the Bantams rattled off four unanswered goals to go into intermission with a 6-1 advantage. Gratry scored the first four Bantam goals of the game, while sophomore attack Meredith Goeller (Kennet Square, Pa.) and senior tri-captain attack Anna Sullivan (Brookline, Mass.) each scored on free positions later in the half.
Trinity opened the second stanza with five straight goals, including two more by Gratry, to go ahead, 11-2, and Gratry scored again with 14:20 left in the game for a 12-3 lead. The Cardinals woke up with seven goals in a 6:42 span in the final 10 minutes to make for a respectable final score.
Trinity senior tri-captain goalie Kelly Jo Burnett (Pennington, N.J.) made seven saves, while Wesleyan sophomore netminder Meriel Darzen (Concord, Mass.) had 14 stops. Freshman midfielder Rebecca Vogel (Blauvelt, N.Y.) paced Wesleyan with a hat trick.
