TRINITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROUTS LEHMAN

Hartford, Conn.- Sophomore forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) notched 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and four steals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 81-50 win over the visiting Lehman College Lightning in women’s basketball action this evening at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improves to 4-6 and stops a three-game losing streak, while the Lightning drop to 4-13 and ends a three-game winning streak.

Trinity senior captain guard Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, Mass.) scored 10 of her 15 points in the first eight minutes to help the Bantams take a 22-10 lead. The Lightning went on a 16-8 run to cut the lead to 30-26 with six minutes remaining in the half, before Trinity pulled back ahead for a double-digit halftime advantage. Trinity shot 60.6 percent from the field in the first half, while Lehman senior guard Diana Olaya (Brooklyn, N.Y.) kept the Lightning within striking distance with 15 first-half points.

Trinity held Lehman to four field goals in 22 attempts in the second half and outscored the Lightning, 38-20. The Bantams finished with a 54.4 field goal percentage in the game. Bontempo added three steals to her 15 points, including three three-pointers in five tries, while freshman forward Jennifer Gargiulo (Boxborough, Mass.) tallied 14 points and nine boards. Freshman guard Deidre Savageau (Framingham, Mass.) had a career-high 11 points off the bench, and sophomore guard Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) notched 10 points, a career-high 12 assists, and six boards for the Bantams. Olaya paced the Lightning with 18 points, while sophomore guard Katherine Santiago (Washington Heights, N.Y.) recorded 17 points, six assists, and four steals.
