Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore center Rebecca Bell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a game-high 24 points, sinking eight out of 10 shots from the foul line, five rebounds, and four assists to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 71-52 win over the Amherst College Lady Jeffs in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s basketball action this afternoon. Amherst falls to 10-10 overall with the loss, while Trinity improves to 7-12. Both teams are now 1-6 in the NESCAC.
Trinity blew the game wide-open with a 23-5 run over the first 11 minutes. Amherst missed its first six field goal attempts, shooting just 1-for-15 from the field during the stretch, and never came within 13 points of the lead from that point on.
The Bantams played just six players in the game, and three of their five starters, sophomore forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.), sophomore guard Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) and senior guard Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, Mass.), logged the full 40 minutes. They shot a scorching 57.7 percent from the field (15-for-26) in the first half, held a 47-26 lead at the break.
McCaffrey finished with 17 points and four steals and rookie forward Jennifer Gargiulo (Boxborough, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Amherst was led by rookie forward Julie Smith (Villanova, Pa.) with 13 points, four blocks and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 12 points, eight boards and three assists for the Lady Jeffs.
