TRINITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
WINS THRILLER OVER WPI

Hartford, Conn. Sophomore guard Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass) hit three out of four free throws in the final twenty seconds of the game to give the Trinity College Bantams a 53-49 victory over the visiting Worchester Polytechnic Institute Engineers in women’s basketball action this evening at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. The loss drops Worcester Tech to 3-9, while the victory pushes the Bantam record to 3-3 and ends a two game losing skid.

Sophomore forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) sank two free throws to put Trinity up one point with :36 to play in regulation, and Trinity senior captain guard Liz Bontempo (Granby, Mass.) stole the ensuing inbounds pass and dished the ball off to Nesbit who drew the foul

A back and forth game saw the score tied four times and the lead change five times in the final four minutes of play. Trinity, which led early, 21-12, fell behind by six points at the half after a 17-2 run by the Engineers. An 18-9 run to open the second half saw Trinity even the score with just under seven minutes to play.

The Bantams were led in scoring by McCaffrey who poured in 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, while freshman mid-season transfer guard Deidre Savageau (Framingham, Mass.) notched four points, four steals, and three rebounds in her Trinity debut.  The Engineers were led in scoring by Taryn Mroczkowski (Charlton, Mass.) who notched 12 points and three boards, while Lee Helberg (South Yarmouth, Mass.) added 10 points in the losing effort.
