COLBY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
HOLDS ON AGAINST TRINITY
Hartford, Conn. - Senior tri-captain center Sarah Walsh (Catonsville, Md.) notched team-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds, along with four assists and three steals to lead the visiting Colby College White Mules to an 85-74 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s basketball action this afternoon at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity falls to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the NESCAC with its third straight loss, while the Mules, ranked No. 4 in New England, improve to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the league with their second win in a row.
Trinity got off to a fast start offensively, led by sophomore center Rebecca Bell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who scored 13 points in the first eight minutes of the game to propel the Bantams to a 25-16 lead. The Mules battled back with a 13-3 lead that game them the lead at 29-28 on a lay-up by Walsh, and built the advantage up to 40-32 at the half. Walsh scored 12 points and senior tri-captain guard Bianca Belcher (Lewiston, Maine) tallied 11 in the first half for the Mules, while Bell had 13 and sophomore forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) scored 11 for the Bantams in the first stanza.
Colby led by as many as 16 points in the second half, before the Bantams rallied to cut the lead to six at 77-71 with less than two minutes remaining on a pair of free throws by McCaffrey. Colby held on for the win, making eight out of 10 shots from the foul line in the final minute.
Gargiulo led all scorers with a career-high 25 points, making 10 out of 16 shots from the field, and added nine rebounds, while Bell finished with 21 points, sinking four out of eight shots from three-point range, and two blocked shots. McCaffrey ended up with 20 points, 10 boards, and six assists, and sophomore guard Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) dished out eight assists for the Bantams. Gargiulo had 17 points in the second half.
Walsh was one of four White Mules in double figures, followed by Belcher with 19 points, along with nine assists, sophomore forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) with 18 points to go with her six rebounds, and freshman guard Sarah Kelly (Portsmouth, N.H.) with 11 points.
