SALVE REGINA NIPS TRINITY
IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Hartford, Conn.- Junior guard Lauren Beverly (Auburn, Mass.) tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists to lead the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks to a 59-57 win over the Trinity College Bantams in women’s basketball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity drops to 11-8 overall with its first loss in the last three games, while the Seahawks improve to 18-3 with their 11 consecutive win.
The teams traded baskets over the opening 10 minutes, until Salve opened up an 18-13 lead with 9:53 remaining in the first half. The Bantams fought their way back, tying the score at 27-27 on a free throw by senior co-captain center Angela Iandoli (Worcester, Mass.) as the half came to a close. Trinity junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) totaled nine points and 10 rebounds in the first half.
With the game tied at 53-53, Salve Regina scored five straight points to pull ahead late in the second half. Trinity senior guard Kristin Heil (Beverly, Mass.) made a 15-foot jumper and freshman forward Rebecca Bell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) converted a put-back to bring the Bantams within one at 58-57 in the final minute. Trinity had the ball with 15 seconds remaining, and a three-point attempt by senior guard Alison Hadden (Drexel Hill, Pa.) rattled in and out. Trinity had one last chance for an out-of bounds tip-in with less than one full second on the clock, but McCloskey was called for a push-off on the play.
McCloskey led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed a game-high rebounds, while Hadden added 15 points for Trinity. Sophomore guard Jill Nicholson (Quincy, Mass.) had 13 points and senior forward Amy Forte (Vernon, Conn.) recorded seven points and five assists for the Seahawks.
