TURKINGTON LEADS CLARK WOMEN
TO HOOPS WIN OVER TRINITY
Worcester, Mass.- Junior guard Rachel Turkington (Holland, Mass.) had 22 points, five rebounds, and three assists to lead the Clark University Cougars to a 68-65 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in women’s basketball this afternoon at Kneller Athletic Center. Trinity, which snaps a three-game winning streak, falls to 3-2, while the Cougars improve to 5-1.
After the teams played to 27-27 tie at the half, Trinity pulled ahead, 45-36, with 13:23 to play in the game. Clark stormed back with an 18-4 spurt to take a 54-49 lead with seven minutes remaining, but the Bantams knotted the score at 54-54 on a pair of free throws by junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) with 5:47 left on the clock.
Clark scored nine out of the next 12 points, including a three-pointer by Turkington that gave the Cougars a six-point advantage at 63-57 with less than three minutes to play. McCloskey scored a lay-up to cut the score to 67-65 with :45 remaining, but Bantam senior co-captain Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass.) fell short on a 10-footer to tie the score with five seconds left and her potentially game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer hit the front of the rim.
McCloskey led all scorers with 25 points and grabbed a game-high 14 boards, sinking 11 out 14 shots from the floor. Bantam senior forward McKenzie Corby (Bethel, Conn.) notched 12 points and six assists, and Dullea added 10 points. Freshman forward Briana Freeman (Maynard, Mass.) came off the bench to score 13 points for the Cougars.
