BOWDOIN BEATS TRINITY WOMEN'S HOOPS

Brunswick, Maine - Junior forward Kristi Royer (Lewiston, Maine) totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to an 82-50 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women’s basketball action this afternoon.

Trinity finishes the regular season with a 12-11 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the NESCAC, after losing its final three games. The Bantams have qualified for the NESCAC Championship Tournament for the first time, and will play a first round game on the road on Tue., Feb. 19. Bowdoin, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 5 in the nation, finishes the season at 22-1 overall and 8-1 in the league. The Polar Bears earn the top seed in the NESCAC tourney, receiving a bye to the semi-final round which it will host, along with the finals, on Feb. 23 and 24.

Bowdoin went ahead 11-3 early, thanks to six points by sophomore guard Lora Trenkle (Surry, Maine), and outscored Trinity, 13-2, later in the first half to take a 43-27 lead shortly before the break. Trinity closed to within eight points at 43-35 at halftime, but was outscored, 39-15, in the second stanza.

Trinity freshman forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) had a team-high 15 points, along with five rebounds, while junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) contributed five points and 10 boards. Trenkle finished with 14 points, and senior guard Jesse Mayol (Westbrook, Maine) notched 10 points and eight assists for the Polar Bears.
