After posting a 15-18 record, including a fourth-place finish in the NESCAC Championship Tournament, the Trinity College volleyball team returns with the passion and the talent to go even further in 2001. A solid core of veterans and a group of talented newcomers should propel the Bantams to another successful campaign in their first season under new Head Coach Angela Mills.
The 2001 squad boasts five seniors, including two-time All-NESCAC selection Beth Landry (Troy, Mich.) and three-year starters Kristin Hagan (Kentfield, Calif.) and Molly Roach (Salt Lake City, Utah). Landry is a versatile athlete and a tremendous leaper, although a bit under-sized at middle blocker. She had 275 kills and 278 digs a year ago. Hagan, who led the squad in kills (314) and digs (330) last fall, is an intense outside hitter with consistent passing and blocking skills, while Roach provides the team with a big, blocking defender on the right side. Fellow seniors Whitney Cronk (Athens, Ga.), and Katherine Bennett (London, England) give Coach Mills a nice mix of experience and athleticism off the bench.
Junior setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) returns after totaling over 2,000 assists in her first two seasons, while sophomore Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, NC) had an outstanding freshman season in the middle last fall, totaling 199 kills and 80 blocks. Rookies Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) and Charlotte Grassi (Chevy Chase, Md.), both of whom are 6’0, will be immediate contributors at outside hitter and in the middle.
The Bantams have the talent to contend for the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title and a first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in 2000.
