COAST GUARD DOWNS TRINITY SOFTBALL

Hartford, Conn. – The United States Coast Guard Academy Bears scored 10 runs in the final two frames en route to a 12-3 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in softball action this afternoon.  The loss drops the Bantams to 3-11-1 on the season, while Coast Guard ups its record to 11-6.

Down 1-0 in the second inning, Trinity senior Sue Kelly (Milford, Mass.) ripped a line drive double into the right center gap, and later scored to tie the game when Lauren Moyer (Bedford, N.H.) reached on an error.  Trinity took the lead an inning later, using a walk to Kelly, base hits by sophomore Marion Protano (Manalapan, N.J.) and senior Melissa Meza (El Paso, Texas), and a double by senior co-captain Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) to take a 3-1 lead.

The Bantam lead disintegrated when the Bears capitalized on five walks to score five runs in the fifth frame.  After retiring the side in order in the bottom of the inning, the Bears then iced the game in the top of the sixth by scoring five more runs.  Coast Guard put the game out of reach on a bases loaded triple by freshman Steph Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas.) in the fifth, and a two-run homer by classmate Steph Adams (Pasadena, Md.) in the sixth.
