HEATH LEADS TRINITY SOFTBALL TO
DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AGAINST BOWDOIN

Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) went 5-for-6 for the day with three runs, three RBI, two doubles, two steals, and two walks to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-4 win in the first game and a split of the doubleheader against the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon.  Trinity moves to 5-14-1 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC East, while the Polar Bears, who won the nightcap by a score of 9-4, are now 6-12 overall and 1-1 in the division.

Trinity broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth inning seven singles and a walk.  Freshman Laura Watson (Carlisle, Mass.) and senior Susan Kelly (Milford, Mass.) each has RBI singles and scored in the inning.  Bowdoin cut the lead to 6-4 with two runs in the sixth frame, thanks to RBI singles by junior Rebekah Metzler (Hancock, Maine) and freshman Danielle Chagnon (Windsor Locks, Conn.), but Trinity tacked on an insurance run in its half of the inning.  Kelly tripled home Heath with two outs to make the score, 7-4, and freshman pitcher Victoria Moshier (Old Saybrook, Conn.) retired the side in order in the seventh including a strikeout to end the game.  Moshier went the distance, scattering 10 hits and striking out four.

In the second game, Bowdoin took a 3-1 lead after four innings with runs in the second, third, and fourth frames, and added three more runs in the fifth inning.  Freshman Megan Rodgers (Chesterfield, Mo.) doubled in two runners and scored on a ground out to give Bowdoin what appeared to be a comfortable 6-1 advantage.

Trinity fought its way back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of three Polar Bear fielding miscues.  Heath and Kelly drove home runs with two-out singles in the inning.  The Polar Bears extended their lead in the sixth frame with an unearned run, and scored two more unearned runs in the seventh inning.  Bowdoin freshman righty Abby Daley (Collinsville, Conn.) allowed eight hits and no earned runs to earn the complete game win.
