BATES SOFTBALL SWEEPS TRINITY

Lewiston, Maine – Senior tri-captain Krissie Whiting (Contoocock, N.H.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including the game-winning hit and RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 4-3 win in the first game and a sweep of the doubleheader in (New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon at Lafayette Street Field.  Trinity falls to 5-18-1 overall and 1-5 in the NESCAC Easy with the losses, while the Bobcats, who won the second game, 8-0, in five innings, improve to 5-11 overall and 2-2 in the division.

Trinity rallied back from a 3-1 deficit in the first game, scoring two ruins in the top of the sixth inning when senior Susan Kelly (Milford, Mass.) and freshman Alexandra Costello (Andover, Mass.) each scored an unearned run off Bates senior tri-captain starter Ginger Walsh (New London, N.H.).  Trinity freshman Laura Watson (Carlisle, Mass.) singled and Kelly doubled to give Trinity runners on second and third base in the top of the seventh frame, but Walsh yielded a pair of grounders to third to keep the game tied entering the bottom of the inning.  Whiting came up with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and bases loaded, after a double, a walk, and two fielder’s choice plays, and drove in her third run of the game to win it for the Bobcats.

Walsh recorded the win, allowing seven hits and one earned run, while Trinity freshman right-hander Victoria Moshier (Old Saybrook, Conn.) surrendered nine hits in a complete game effort.  Trinity senior co-captain Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) accounted for the first Trinity run with an RBI double in the first inning.  Bates took the nightcap with four unearned runs in a six run, fourth inning.
