2002 Softball Outlook

Trinity College

With a solid core of returning veterans and a talented incoming freshman class, the 2002 Trinity College softball team has the components for a successful campaign, despite playing one of the toughest schedules in New England. Under the direction of Head Coach Tami Hyde (second season), the Bantams should be significantly improved from last spring’s 7-22 squad.

Senior Elizabeth Bontempo, a three-year starter at second base and an all-league selection in 2000, and junior first baseman Maureen Heneghan give the Bantams two returning starters on the right side of the infield. With the loss of four-year starters Tricia Mase and Brianna Stanton at shortstop and third base, respectively, to graduation, Trinity will rely on the freshman Marion-Anna Protano at third and converted centerfielder Laura Heath at shortstop.

Junior right-hander Kristi McDermott and sophomore righty Lauren McDowell both return to the mound in 2002. McDermott appeared in 22 games last spring, posting a 6-12 record with a 2.66 ERA in 123.2 innings. McDowell improved throughout the year despite a 1-10 mark, finishing strong with solid performances in the second half of her freshman campaign. Protano and fellow freshman Kate Hunter will also see time on the mound.

Sophomore Jennifer Kernan is the lone returner in the outfield, although Hunter and freshman Alexandra Blumer are promising offensive players.  Senior Clare Bullock and freshman Sarah Hoyle, will split behind the plate with the other moving to the outfield
