TUFTS SOFTBALL SWEEPS TRINITY

Medford, Mass.- The Tufts University softball team scored 19 runs in the first three innings of the day to set the tone for a double-header sweep of the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon. The Jumbos won the first game 19-2, then followed with a 9-3 victory in the second game. Playing in their home, New England and NESCAC opener, the Jumbos improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the league. Trinity slipped to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in NESCAC East.

Trinity senior Clare Bullock (Columbia, S.C.) had the Bantams' only hit in the first game, a single to lead off the fifth. In a game that was stopped after five innings due to the slaughter rule, Trinity's only two runs were unearned. The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, getting two hits and executing a double steal that plated junior second baseman Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, Mass.). Tufts picked up where it left off though, when Lis Drake (Chelmsford, Mass.) hit her second home run of the day in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 Jumbo lead. A two-run single by Tufts sophomore catcher Julie Fox (Willow Springs, Ill.) in the third and a two-run single by senior first baseman Tiffany Trahan (Chelmsford, Mass.) in the fourth capped three-run innings and the Jumbos had an easy sweep.

Tufts freshman Caroline Grieco (Manasquan, N.J.) went six innings allowing five hits and three runs to get the win in the nightcap. Freshman Marion-Anna Protano (Malalapan, N.J.) and junior Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) had two singles apiece in the game for Trinity.
