TRINITY SOFTBALL SQUAD OPENS
SEASON WITH SPLIT IN FLORIDA

Fort Myers, Fla.- Junior first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Windsor,
Conn.) went 4-for-seven in the two games to lead the Trinity College Bantams
to a 9-7 win over Framingham State College and a split of its season-opening
softball doubleheader at Lee County Sports Complex. The Bantams dropped
their first game, 9-2, against Brockport State College. The Bantams are now
1-1, while Brockport improved to 1-0 and Framingham dropped to 1-3.
Freshman catcher Sarah Hoyle (Ansonia, Conn.) belted a two-run
double to left-center field to key a four-run first inning for the Bantams
against Framingham State. Framingham closed to 4-3 after two frames, before
Trinity capitalized on three errors to score three runs in the top of the
fourth inning.
Framingham tied the score off Trinity junior right-hander Kristi
McDermott (Barrington,R.I.) in the top of the fifth inning on three singles
and two Bantam errors, but Trinity rallied for a pair of runs in the top of
the sixth stanza. Heneghan walked, stole second base, and was advanced to
third on a sacrifice bunt. Heneghan scored on an error for the go-ahead run
and senior co-captain Liz Bontempo (Granby, Mass.) touched home on another
Framingham State miscue.
McDermott allowed just eight hits and one earned run over seven
innings to earn the win on the mound for Trinity. Bantam sophomore Lauren
McDowell (Chilmark, Mass.) took the loss against Brockport State, which
scored six runs in the third inning to highlight the victory.
